Length: 8 weeks
Cost: $8.00 members

Instructor: Ernesto Almada
Location: in one of our rooms
Description: The Sketching class continues with our 'seasoned' Instructor Ernesto Almada. While he may be a new instructor here, neither art, nor teaching is new to him. Ernesto is an Art major and has spent 33 years in the school district as a bilingual tutor. During that time he worked with an after school program. During that time he taught young students art skill, but teaching adults would be no different. He had several students who earned awards in local art shows. Classes will start with a foundation in basic shapes and then use those shapes to learn shading before moving on to more complete objects, 3D, still life, then finally portraits. There will be no tracing or copying of other people’s works. He wants people to show their own creativity. Students need to bring their own pencils (from 9H to 9B – The HB scale ranges from 9H, a hard pencil that leaves fine, light marks, to 9B, a soft pencil which a high ratio of graphite that leaves bold, dark marks.), or even just a #2 to start, a sharpener, as well as a sketch pad. The size of the sketchpad will depend upon a student’s personal preference. So make your mark in the world and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. That’s what they make erasers for.

Hand and Foot
Time: Wednesdays 10:00 am
Cost: Free members
Free non-members
Location: Game Room
Description: You might think it’s related to Twister but it’s not. It’s actually a card game, related to Canasta. Hand and Foot is a North American game variation where each player is dealt two sets of cards using one as the “hand” and one as the “foot. There are numerous variations of the game and no “standard” rules. You can either play as individuals or as teams. The most common version of the game is played with four players in partnerships; it can also be played by six people in two teams of three or by any number of individuals. The following rules are for our “favorite” way to play with four people, two teams of two. To play you’ll need four to six full decks of 52 cards, including the jokers – Rules vary from one to two decks per player, or one more than the number of players). The aim is to get rid of cards from your hand (11 cards), and then from your foot (11 cards), by melding them. A meld is a set of three to seven cards of equal rank placed face up on the table. The play ends when one of the partners “goes out”. It’s a very popular game here at the center and the group is always looking for new players and are eager to teach people how to play. If you like Hand and Foot, Canasta, or card games in general and you think you might be interested in play, the group meets on Tuesdays at 10:00 am in the Parlor Room.
Sinatra Dinner Show
By: Mike Sylva
Ol Blue Eyes was back at the center, much to the delight of a sold out crowd, for another Dinner Show. Michael Sinatra crooned oldies but goodies. While our chefs were busy preparing an Italian dinner for the crowd, Michael sang to an audience as hungry for his songs, as they were for dinner. We call him the Chairman of the Board, he also sang the hits of Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, and many others.
While popular with everyone, he is always especially popular with the ladies. A few lucky ones came up front for a personal crooning. One poignant moment was when Jack & Regina Milke, celebrating their anniversary, did a special dance.
Thanks to our volunteers, Aneta Giltner, Dianne Kassotis, Theresa Rago for helping serve dinner and drinks to everyone. Special thanks go out to PrimeCare for sponsoring this great night out!
